OMG How embarrassing!  Is there one main cause of bad breath?  We all know that smoking is an obvious cause as well as eating certain foods, such as garlic and onions.  The food or the smoke is absorbed into the bloodstream; it is then transferred to the lungs, where it is expelled.  There is really not a lot you can do about it, the smell can be masked but the odor will still be there until the food is eliminated.  Dieters will develop bad breath from infrequent eating

If you don’t brush enough or floss to get the left over food from your mouth, it will sit there and collect bacteria, which will cause bad breath.  Even dentures that are not cleaned correctly can leave a bad odor.

Diseases such a periodontal or gum disease is first identified by a persistent bad breath.  Stomach disorders, diabetes and respiratory conditions will give off a bad odor in the breath, as well as liver and kidney aliments.  If your dentist tells you that your mouth is healthy, then you may need to see your doctor next to determine the cause of the bad breath.

Dry mouth, also known as (xerostomia), can cause bad breath.  This occurs when the flow of saliva decreases. Saliva is necessary to cleanse the mouth and remove particles that may cause odor. Dry mouth may be caused by various medications, salivary gland problems or continuously breathing through the mouth. If you suffer from dry mouth, your dentist may prescribe artificial saliva, or suggest using sugarless candy and increasing your fluid intake.

The most essential need for reducing bad mouth health and encourage and maintain good mouth health is to eliminate periodontal disease.  This means you need to schedule routine dental cleaning and check ups.  Talk to your dentist about any breath odors you are aware or concerned of.  Keep you medical health updated as far as medications, illnesses and surgeries.

Brush your teeth and tongue

twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove food and plaque.  Floss or use an inter-dental cleaner to your teeth once a day. If you wear dentures soak them over night and be sure to do good mouth care on your gums and tongue.

So the question of what is the cause of bad breath is that there are many causes of bad breath.  What is the cause of your bad breath?  I bet if you think about it and go through the possibilities you can discover it.  The first thing you should do is see your dentist.  Most bad breath comes from dental problems.
