Is bed wetting an embarrassing issue for you?

is bed wetting an embarrassing issue for youIf you are a teenager then it is probably a true statement that bed wetting is an embarrassing issue for you. There is a medical term for this called enuresis and so you don’t feel so alone, know to that there are a lot of other teenagers with the same problem. Unfortunately it is one of those problems like many others problems that teens seem to keep to themselves and not talk about.

There are differing degrees of enuresis, some teenagers will soak their beds each and every night while others just seem to have an occasional mishap. Either way it is a problem that will effect many parts of a teenagers life and one that needs to be addressed. Teenagers self worth alone takes a beating if they have this problem and it most likely will keep them from engaging in close relationships.

When teenagers worry over this problem they will become loners, not wanting to sleep anywhere but there own bed in case it happens. Some will go to others homes for sleepovers and yet refuse to sleep. It can be a chronic and a most difficult problem to work with.

A lot of people seem to think that when a teenager wets his bed it is purely psychological, so even the families may try to hide it and not get help for it. But it is not “In their heads” and can have a variety of reasons that it is happening.

The following are a few of the reasons:

  • Their sleep patterns are not in sync with when there body tells them to go urinate.
  • They drink alot of liquid just before bed
  • Nerve and muscle control may be abnormal or stunted
  • They may dream they are going to the bathroom
  • They may at night make to much urine and don’t wake up to get up to the bathroom

If you are a teenager and bed wetting is new to you then you may be:

Overly stressed with life

  • Major changes happening in your life
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Drinking caffeinated drinks
  • Taking medications
  • Have a urinary tract infection
  • Kidney problem
  • Diabetes
  • Taking sleeping medications
  • Use illegal drugs
  • Sleep apnic

You may be a bed wetter or reading this because you know one. The best way to get through this is to first try prevention and if that does not help see a doctor to make sure nothing is physically wrong. Most teenagers will grow out of it but may need some support. The worse thing you can do is to belittle yourself or others. Don’t do it, shame should not be involved.

You can try the following:

  • Don’t drink caffeinated drinks
  • Don’t do illegal drugs
  • Don’t take sleeping pills
  • Don’t drink anything three hours before you are to sleep
  • Use an alarm and wake yourself to get up and go pee
  • Sleep properly
  • If you have diabetes get it under control
  • Don’t be embarrassed to see your doctor, they have seen everything and this is not new. Just think that they might be able to help you and you will not have to deal with this problem.
  • Keep a diary to help you figure out any clues to why you bed wet.
